No Salmonella In These Babies!

The hubby has put great energy and effort into this project. Lo and behold, the fruits of his labor have come alive! We have tomatoes! Some were planted with great care while others were bought as already growing plants. But it wasn't until recently that tomatoes started to show. This is so exciting. I never had fruit growing in my own backyard. Okay, so we don't have a backyard, it's a balcony. Whatever. They're still growing. We have plum tomatoes, black tomatoes and...um, regular tomatoes. Haven't got all the names down yet. But either way we'll have fresh tomatoes ready for consumption in a few weeks or so. Yay!

Home grown tomatoes! I can remember when I was a kid, bringing home bags of fresh ripe New Jersey tomatoes from visits to relatives during those hot summer months.

My grandfather had a very green thumb (he was raised on a farm in Poland) and after he retired, worked as a gardener for a wealthy woman.

He grew his own magnificent tomatoes in his back yard, and some would be as big as pumpkins. His secret? Every night in the summer, before going to bed, he would go outside in the dark and pee in his garden. I swear, it was a nightly ritual. I think the nitrogen or something like that in urine did it.

I wouldn't recommend that Timothy do this, however. I'm sure there must be some kind of code that prohibits peeing in gardens in New York City.
